Social media is great, it’s a perspective into everyone’s experience. A platform where you can connect with others on a personal level that is almost parasocial. If you’re not participating, how could others feel close to you? If you don’t post, you’re not there. No one’s thinking of you, at least that’s how it feels. Almost like peace. Or maybe everyone’s thinking of you and they’ve wondered where you’ve gone. A place that can only be accessed digitally. Digital form has such vast limitless experiences. Knowledge, history, wisdom, connections. It’s an all-in-one of what life can offer. It’s a virtual reality that feels too real. Too close to what we’ve known, just at a greater capacity at the tips of our fingers. Our brain loves ease, we love to do nothing and absolutely something at the same time. What if our phone is just a mirror of what life truly has to offer. Instead of a virtual experience, we can live in reality. What seems too good to be true on social media can be real. But to know that, is to experience that, for real. Every day is a constant wonder on how things can be done easier, faster, more accessible. It’s this tortuous feeding onto something we don’t have yet. The villain in Fantastic Four, Galactus was a representation of consumerism. Once a mortal, now a cosmic force of nature who consumes planets to sustain his existence. He is the shadow side of everyone behind a screen. Consuming content after content to sustain dopamine or anything that makes us feel good. He discovers a child who holds the power cosmic, a source of unlimited cosmic energy. He finds that to consume him would cure his insatiable hunger, in other words the key to his liberation. This to me, represents chasing enlightenment and to become whole within. To become whole is to realize we need nothing else. Who needs not consumerism, the very thing we do everyday. We chase a reality where we do not. To starve ourselves of temptation and indulge in the slow fruit of life. That we can reap the rewards of true happiness that is sustainable. As we’ve always had the access, just not as quickly as superficial and fast virtually modified fruits bring. To invest in the slowness of joy that life brings can allow us to create sacred and present value. To create paradise and soul sought heaven on earth, this material plane. Taking our time instead of the rush that blinds individuals into thinking we don’t have enough, and ultimately keeps us in a loop of future thinking. Future thinking that is projected onto us, for what they want at the cost of our attention, time, and money. What a vicious cycle, to be put through. Without social media, we’re left with “how?”. But how questions are not meant for us to solve, it is for us to become conscious of such wonder and allow it to unfold through life.
